If only Worcester always moved this fast

by Brendan Melican on March 23, 2009

Apparently Mayor Lukes was feeling the burn from the torch and pitchfork crowd, as Donna Byrnes seems to have lost her sweet new job only 24hrs after most of us first learned about it.

Donna C. Byrnes, 58, moved from the superintendent’s office to the classroom after former School Superintendent James A. Caradonio stepped down last September.
Ms. Byrnes will be allowed to stay on in the classroom in a lower-paying substitute teacher position until the job can be posted in May, said Mayor Konstantina B. Lukes, who is chairman of the School Committee.

So instilling the fear of god angry mobs does work with local politicians. This is the kind of precedent I can support.

Hear hear! Who else needs to go?

Gordon March 24, 2009 at 4:52 pm

A scandal, who’s teaching our children? What’s going on in the school Dept.? Please give me a break! I just saw Worcester News Tonight show posts from the T+G comment section as proof that HIGH CRIMES have been committed at the Chandler Street School what a bunch of hyperventilation. Like I posted on a thread here on radioball that there was going to be a move by City Hall to combine Administrative positions with the School Dept. this is a shot across the bow by the Mayor! Keep the School side Separate from the City side or the School Dept. Will become HYPER Politicized and the only ones who will suffer are inner City school kids!

lincolntf March 24, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Sorry, Gordon, but you couldn’t be more of a chump.
Education policy hasn’t had anything to do with the actual children for decades. Whatever keeps the bloated, brainless dopes in paying positions is the only priority.
You got a beef with the way it works? Go talk to Dimbulb-Deval or Over-his-head Obama. You voted for both of them, so they “owe” you.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 3:21 am

Another mindless post by lincoln.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 3:40 am

This thread is about Konnie Lukes Worcesters own “Bridge to nowhere”! But remember this lincoln Question 1 is the bell weather for 2010 Governor Patrick wins by more than he did in 06! And President Obama Approval #’s are still in the high 60′s the D’s will pick up more seats in the house and senate in 2010 your racist nightmare continues for the near and distant future lincoln.

lincolntf March 25, 2009 at 9:49 am

Wrong as usual Gordon, and you’re the one who is race-obsessed.
Obama’s approval numbers have fallen well behind what even Jimmy Carter’s were at this point in his term. You really ought to look it up.
Keep voting for the “black guy” because it makes you feel all warm and tingly, I’ll keep voting for people who actually have a clue. Oh, my candidates also tend to not mock the mentally retarded, unlike our current Special Olympian-in-Chief.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 3:11 pm

lincoln said-Keep voting for the “black guy” because it makes you feel all warm and tingly……you have a race problem lincoln! Educate yourself on the polls,

http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/Mar09b-AIG.pdf

he ‘s way out in front of Jimmy Carter and Obama is going to give the Schools lots of money to retain and hire teachers renovate and build new schools and of course make more money available for student loans and grants. Donna Byrnes should have no problem getting her Masters!

lincoln March 25, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Yup, Obama will cure all your ills.
Step right up and grab a bottle of the amazing, never before seen, absolutely, astoundingly, magically perfect snake oil!!!

I’m sure that Obama will be oh-so different from all the previous yammering Liberals who got Worcester and Massachusetts so far into the shitter.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 4:21 pm

Worcester in the shitter? You can’t be paying close attention to the Worcester Scene if you think that lincoln. If the City Square deal goes through in the next couple of weeks (http://www.telegram.com/article/20090322/COLUMN27/903220361) as expected Downtown Worcester will be humming, City Manager will be Politically in the strongest position that he has ever been in. The Airport being sold to Mass Port and has a carrier, City Square on line, 12 million under the cap, health care reform and on n on! Looks like a great INCUMBENT INSURANCE to me. I like em all save Germain and Lukes the wedge politics has to stop the City needs a real leader in the Mayors Seat someone like Tim Murray!

lincoln March 25, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Yes, Gordo.
Just keep waiting for those geniuses and titans of industry down at City Hall to figure out basic math, and you’ll be fine.
The corruption and incompetence of the Worcester leadership will automatically disappear, just like all of the “breaking ground” dates for the City Square white elephant have disappeared.

lincoln March 25, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Tee-hee, I just checked out the T&G site and read that this broad who has been pretending to have graduated from Amherst College actually went to a diploma mill called “Annhurst College”. Can that possibly be true?

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 5:22 pm

There’s no corruption at City Hall. Yeah, you better get on topic lincoln, because you don’t have a clue about what’s going on in Worcester.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 5:25 pm

You mean Sean Sutner’s original report was wrong? I’m flabbergasted, or maybe you’re wrong, who knows?

lincolntf March 25, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I know exactly what is going on in Worcester. The thieves and frauds have stripped the City of any potential. The mindless drones continue to support the “SAME” in the name of “CHANGE”, meanwhile Worcester builds “skating rinks” that turn out to be open latrines.
Keep up the good work, Worms.

Gordon March 25, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Pretty soon people are going to start calling you a naysayer, lincoln.

lincolntf March 25, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Since the same things will be happening ten years from now, I’d suggest “soothsayer”.

Gordon March 26, 2009 at 3:27 pm

The only thing i hate more than bashing the City of Worcester is bashing the DEAD!

http://parcbench.com/article_details.php?RId=64&topic=tv&WId=28

lincoln March 26, 2009 at 4:45 pm

The difference between bashing a dead City and bashing a dead hippie is what?

Gordon March 26, 2009 at 6:02 pm

You like that article lincoln? Time to watch the Governor!

lincoln March 26, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Hey Buck, you out there anywhere?
I saw you got a shout-out in DW’s “What I’m ragging about today” column.
Are congratulations for getting your blog mentioned in a fairly good-sized newspaper warranted? If so, they are conveyed.

Still, no matter how Atheist you are, selling out your Sunday School Teacher is definitely gonna cost you a few extra weeks in Purgatory. See ya’ there.

Paulie March 28, 2009 at 7:02 pm

we have something in common Gordo:>)

http://www.baevents.com/garcia/

Gordon March 29, 2009 at 4:45 am

Nice Paulie :>)! Look at this piece by Sean Sutner today just like I said this whole School hiring thing is all about the Council taking over at the School side read this it’s just a rehash of all the BS that the T+G has written in the last week!Cheryl A. Del Signore what a lousy union head isn’t she related to some one on the City side?

http://telegram.com/article/20090329/NEWS/903290379/1116

Paulie March 29, 2009 at 10:07 am

Ms. Byrnes can teach your kid’s Gordo….if I was married and had children and found out that my child in need of Special Needs was being assisted by Ms. Byrne..the ole lady would take her out back and teach her something and I’d punch Mr. Caradonio in the nose:>The Bonnie & Clyde of the WPS

This entire travesty is a perfect example of why one has to be leary of everyone unfortunately…City on the Move…my ass

Very interesting watching everyone throw each other under the bus…..not an honorable person in the lot

Gordon March 29, 2009 at 11:14 am

She can teach my kids anytime, this is all about the Council sticking their nose where it don’t belong. If you want to set school policy run for school committee or vote for charter change. Instead it looks like with help from uninformed people like you Konnie et al and Seanboy screaming scandal and crisis are going to try to scam your way into the school dept.! Today it’s Byrnes tomorrow it’ll be UNION MEMBERS that get the shaft with EAW President helping the SCABS!

lincolntf March 29, 2009 at 11:33 am

The best idea I’ve seen so far was over on the T&G comments section. An FOIA request to verify that all of the legally mandated qualifications for Teaching positions have been met by all current employees. I’ll be interested to see if it happens, and if it does, what the results are.

Gordon March 29, 2009 at 11:38 am

The school Dept. Runs ads on Worcester AM Radio saying anyone with 48 college credits can be a substitute teacher in Worcester for 70 bucks a day where you been lincoln?

Paulie March 29, 2009 at 4:23 pm

you evidently are blind to the community discontent over this issue El Gordo..not unusual for a government wonk…similiar to Gov. Parick’s recent “trivial” comment and then back peddle….where is his favorable ratings right now?? You do use these factors when deciding who is getting elcted do you not?

Gordon March 29, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Created discontent, That Suffolk poll was a robo call poll w/400 LV very undependable! Who ever is the Democrat nominee is in 2010 most likely Governor Patrick will be elected Governor! Konnie Lukes has more of a chance of being beaten this year by Joe Petty and Barbra Haller will most likely lose to Grace Ross!

lincolntf March 29, 2009 at 6:52 pm

When Worcester elects Grace Ross, we’ll know it’s time to turn out the lights for good.

Gordon March 29, 2009 at 7:33 pm

That’s Dist. 4 lincoln Ross will probably have more volunteers than votes that Haller got in 07 I think it was about 1,200!

Gordon March 30, 2009 at 3:44 am

Keep the City Side away from the school side!

Paulie March 31, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I believe you have been heard saying “and there will be light” also El Gordo:>)

Gordon March 31, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Worcesters on the move Paulie! This is a big feather in the cap of the Manager and the remaining Murray “wall of 8″ This gives them a lot of election insurance, I also think this gives Joe Petty and Kate Toomey a leg up in the Mayors race. Konnie Lukes Worcesters own “Bridge To Nowhere” voted NO on City Square didn’t she?

Gordon April 1, 2009 at 7:34 am

Sorry about that Mayor I guess Mayor Lukes voted yes on the original vote for the project even though she was naysayer n chief! Tim Murray will be in town today and this City Square project will put Murrays signature on downtown forever! When he runs for Governor he will have this project to point to real change you can believe in!

Worcester rated the 9th most livable City in the U.S.A!

http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/04/portland_maine.html

Paulie April 4, 2009 at 1:27 pm

you really should be at the gate with your pom poms El Gordo when all our bright minds are leaving….have you read the follow up comments cause we need at least one person fighting back against all the negative comments on it about WooTown..

If your positive vibes make you feel good then good for you El Gordo but the reality is that few outside of City Hall and the west side feel this way about the city..the folks in the burbs around us-our neighbors rarely support us and the further out one gets the same feeling prevails…and this is a damn shame but the reality.

Gordon April 4, 2009 at 4:22 pm

That’s Forbes Magazine Paulie Not me, but I agree with the survey! During this economic downturn Mike O’Brien has gotten the Airport going again, City Square back on track finally, the City is the safest in New England with a great public school system 13 of the best Colleges and Universities in America! A lot of people live in a bubble especially on the west side I read the comments those are the same whiners that blog on the Boston.com daily professional naysayers, the T+G has the same problem with it’s blog! WORCESTER IS ON THE MOVE NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

Paulie April 4, 2009 at 4:48 pm

safe isn’t enough El Gordo….folks want clean neighborhoods…we do not have this..folks want good schols…we do not have this even if you believe it….folks do not want to see other folks walking around in their pajamas every day..folks staying home every day and not contributing…we can have every Taj Mahal there is but unless we start cleaning up these urban neighborhoods we will go no where….a city can not be on the move and have such a high percentage of folks not working and dependent on the feds and staties to support them

Our City Council spends infinite time on vendors, foolish noise ordinances, 1/4 knives and little time on these problem properties which are to numerous to count and destructive to this city and it’s growth. I live and own in em’ I know..

You do not need to keep lecturing me about Mick O’Brien..I have invested a lot of time and money in my neck of the woods and the Canal District…and for 7+ years now as a resident and another 10+ just as a owner in this city..

Paulie April 4, 2009 at 4:50 pm

I find it interesting that you put so much in that Forbes list..only months ago you were railing against big business and repubs ruining the economy:>)

Gordon April 4, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Paulie you live in a bubble, open your eyes and ears look and listen! This City Council is doing a superb job the things you list are minor on the major issues like safety, schools, quality of life and economic development they get high marks and if they stay on this course incumbents will be re-elected easily even Mayor Lukes even though I think Worcester needs some one as Mayor to continue Tim Murrays vision of an 18 hr. downtown I think Mayor Lukes wants to go a different direction she like you Paulie sees the glass as half empty doom n gloom The NO WE CAN’T VISION! The Forbes Survey is just conformation of what people in the Know already think!

Brendan April 5, 2009 at 7:30 am

Gordon, I would argue safety, schools, quality of life and economic development are the minor things. Only because those are the ideals that form the foundation of civilization. We can’t realistically pat ourselves on the back for details Hammurabi worked out. While you’re correct those are the issues average people are concerned about, average people make for mediocre communities; mediocre at best. If you want a city you can legitimately be proud of you need to drill down a bit.

Gordon April 5, 2009 at 9:12 am

I think City Square was a project that the City drilled down a bit on. Also I think the City Square Project will change the buzz about Worcester from being a mediocre bedroom community for Metro West and Boston to a Vibrant Urban Center that stands on it’s own, a destination for business’,families, students and people looking for good food n entertainment!

Brendan April 5, 2009 at 9:25 am

Obviously I hope you’re right.

Gordon April 5, 2009 at 9:39 am

Why didn’t the T+G do a story on the Forbes survey showing Worcester as the 9th most livable City in the U.S.? I think they would rather bash the City so the can get the yahoos like Q et al screamin n posting a bunch of drivel on their web site and uninformed kooks wagging their tongues on talk radio! The Forbes story is good news and information that people deserve to know and I think the T+G has a responsibility to print it! But the print media forgets they are in the INFORMATION BUSINESS not the entertainment business!

Brendan April 5, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Best City lists are not good for much beyond marketing packages. They’re built on arbitrary metrics which don’t translate into real world experience well. As an example #8 on that list was Baltimore, while 20% of Baltimore contains some of the best urban areas in the US the other 80% is made up of great places to get shot in the face. Pitching lists like these to locals is either missing the point entirely or a sure sign of an IQ hovering around room temperature. Fact is, while Worcester has many wonderful qualities we still have lots of work to do, so focusing on the fluff ends up being an unfortunate distraction.

Gordon April 5, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Unfortunate Distraction? A marketing tool? A very good marketing tool if it was one. The person who got this into Forbe’s Magazine, I say bravo. Still I think this is good news for Worcester and the T&G should have covered the story. As for Baltimore, I think the crime situation has quieted down in Baltimore, but in eighty percent of this city you can get shot, Brendan? Or is eighty percent of the city African American?

Paulie April 5, 2009 at 9:54 pm

“Worcester, Peabody? What about Chelsea, Lynn, or Brockton? Anybody want to take investment advice from Forbes?”

>>>best comment on http://www.boston.com regarding forbes placing WooTown 8th….not one positive comment about the city…

Let me ask you this El Gordo..if the west side was removed from the city… where do you think it would be on the list?

If WooTown lent as much energy as it does to securing the west side lifestyle to the urban core..the I might agree and rah rah with you but until I see as much energy expended by our leaders I will continue to be skeptical
