CA legislation aims for full decriminilazation of weed

by Brendan Melican on February 23, 2009

CA Assemblyman Tom Ammiano seems to be introducing a bill today that will seek full decriminalization of marijuana in CA for the stated purpose of taxation.

Mecke said Ammiano’s proposed bill “would remove all penalties in California law on cultivation, transportation, sale, purchase, possession, or use of marijuana, natural THC, or paraphernalia for persons over the age of 21.”

Additionally, the bill would add a tax of $50 per ounce on the sale of marijuana in CA. Ammiano expects that tax to generate roughly 1 Billion in revenue for the state.

I made mention of this subject yesterday; while I hate the idea of more taxes, if you’re going to do it this is the right model.

UPDATE: Here’s coverage of Ammiano’s press conference announcing the bill.

Not thinking very far ahead, are they? If pot becomes legal in California, everybody will just grow their own to avoid paying a point of purchase tax.

That line of reasoning doesn’t go very far in explaining the existence of commercially available produce.

While weed is easy to grow, good weed is not.
