We live in a city being managed like a very small town.
WORCESTER— Nine city councilors have joined forces in pushing for an “unruly gathering” ordinance, intended to help the city crack down on out-of-control house parties by targeting the owners of the homes.
Councilor-at-Large Michael J. Germain, who is spearheading the effort, said the councilors are asking the city administration to look into establishing an ordinance similar to one in Narragansett, R.I. He said that ordinance applies to any group of five or more people who cause a disturbance in any manner on private or public property, regardless of the time of the day.
Mr. Germain said police are allowed to hold the owners of the houses where such public nuisances occur liable for the offense, whether they were home at that time or not, and they can be fined $300 for the first offense. Fines increase for subsequent offenses, reaching a maximum of $500 for the third offense.
So now we’re basing Worcester ordinances on Narragansett? Population 17,000? Really? ‘disturbance of any manner on private or public property’? The council has lost it’s collective mind.
While we’re at it, lets tax smiles on babies. Those fucking no-necks are having way too much fun as well.
On a larger level, how would this not violate the the right of assembly?

It dawned on me while driving to work how easy it will be to break this ordinance.
I vow to all of you that starting next spring I will call the WPD on every child’s birthday party I encounter. If we really want to put a stop to fun we must catch where it begins, childhood.
Never mind the world, Massachusetts is becoming the laughingstock of the country.
There are already laws/ordnances/regs on the books to combat disturbances, etc. Why not enforce them? Because to suddenly start doing their job (without a new “statute” to justify it) the City would have to acknowledge their decades of failure. Now they’ll say that this new gobbledy-gook was just the impetus they needed.
I kinda like the idea of the passive/aggressive civil disobedience measure suggested by Brendan. Every politician worth their tax write-offs hosts barbecues and holiday parties at their homes. Call the cops EVERY time and see how long this new “priority” remains at the top of the agenda.

If you’re really serious about changing the Council than you have to get good candidates with a good message and vision for Worcester to declare their candidacy NOW! Than you have to start raising money today! you will need about 50,000+ to enhance your chances thats about $160.00 a day for the next year!It’s not impossible!
Oh, Gordon, I envy you your idealism. But, the reality in Worcester is that unless you have the backing of the current Council (and its lapdogs in the press) it is nearly impossible to get a seat. Many good people, with more than 50 grand to spend have been kept from serving. If you can’t get free radio time (disguised as information, of course) and if nobody is willing to put a lawn sign up (can’t tick off the incumbent or your City services drop from minimal to nil) or you can’t get the local hangers-on to talk you up at bean suppers and Little League opening days, you can’t get anywhere.
Though, in a theoretical sense you’re right. Unfortunately, the 15%-ish voter turnout leaves it in the land of theory.

If you want “change”, you’re gonna have to change the underlying philosophy of the Council members, not just change their names/faces. We’ve had one-Party rule in this City throughout our decades’ long decline. Let’s change that.

I suppose you are referring to the Gallup tracker because the Rasmussen tracker has Obama up by 5 most national polls CBS,Time, AP, The Hot line tracker and PEW have Obama up by 6-8! But you have to look at the Battle ground state polls that are showing Obama up in Fla., Virginia, Ohio, Nevada, and Missouri and a whopping 15 point lead in Penn. moving up in Indiana most all these states have been red states for decades! The RCP Electoral College count has Obama 348 McHover 190 A BLOW OUT! 12 states are already voting advantage Obama 34 states will be voting in 10 days advantage Obama the cement is starting to harden up! Now to get back to the Topic at hand, the council is split between making Worcester a bedroom community the Lukes camp and those who would like to see Worcester to become a vibrant urban center the Rushton camp and I would include City Manager and myself in that camp but a house divided against it self cannot stand and is destined to failure as we are seeing now with these asshole orders about gatherings and street venders! There needs to be a change on the council especially the Mayors seat Lukes needs to pray for another low turnout to keep her seat I’m sure the local media will do all they can to help her!

no defense of our Mayor here but I have never heard the Mayor state that she wants Worcester to become a bedroom community for Boston..you are making things up now..I would agree that the City Manager & Councilor Rushton have used other vibrant urban communities as barometers for what they would vision Worcester could and should be.
And nothing wrong with barometers…but wishful thinking and the actual “doing” are two very different things.
